Nelson has few peers when it comes to sunny

climate, wine, boutique beers, arts and crafts, fruit

and hops. Tahunanui, meaning big sandy beach,

is the city’s playground; the wide expanse of sand,

calm, warm waters, and steady breezes make it ideal

for swimming, kite surfing, or just lazing in the sun.

Not far from the beach is the Nelson Suburban

Club. Incorporating the RSA, this modern building

has facilities to serve social locals and visiting

clubbies.

There’s a bit of renovation going on at the

moment. The building was bought by a local firm,

Gibbons Holdings, which has leased back to the

club the space needed for members to pursue their

activities. Unneeded areas are being converted into

car parking or retail space.

Rebecca Truscott, who describes herself as the

club’s girl Friday, says that once renovations are

complete, the future looks very exciting.

“The cafe is open every day except Monday,

A warm and friendly welcome is assured at Club

Waimea in Richmond.

The club prides itself on its friendly, sociable and

community-minded approach and its comfortable

and relaxed atmosphere.

Since officially opening in 1974 with 650

members, the club has continued to update its

grounds and facilities to cater for an ever-growing

membership.

Major renovations in 2006 included enlarging the

restaurant and adding two new function rooms; and

in 2012, a newly refurbished outdoor bowling green

opened.

And, with the Richmond Bowling Club’s

move,Club Waimea has an all-weather green.

Club Waimea offers a comprehensive range of

facilities including:

• Full bar facilities, open daily from 11am

• Phil’s Place Restaurant, which serves both

buffet and bistro available Thursday-Sunday from

5.30pm

• Full catering options for business meetings,

Renovations herald ‘exciting future’

from 4.30pm,” she says. “It is well patronised by

members, serving a la carte meals, plus carvery

meals from Thursday to Sunday.”

Certainly the menu has variety, and prices are

what you might expect in a club. Specials, such

as curry and a pint for less than $20, sound pretty

tempting.

“The renovations allow us to retain the bar and

cafe, pokies and TAB, and all the areas members

want for their sub-clubs,” she says.

As in most clubs, members can take part in

indoor bowls, darts, pool snooker and poker. This

club also offers cards, housie, quiz nights, scrabble,

rock and roll dancing, line dancing and a garden

club. To keep everyone tidy, a hairdresser comes in

on Wednesdays. Some of the groups, such as cards

and darts, are involved in local competitions.

Saturday nights are entertainment time. A

variety of gigs from country and western, through

rock ‘n’ roll, to karaoke keep the place humming.

Rebecca says planning for Christmas and New Year

celebrations are on the agenda. Members and holiday

makers should watch the website or Facebook page.

You name it – there’s every chance we’ve got it

weddings, funerals, and events that may need

special requirements.
